A vessel for Klaipeda University is launched

On September 15, Western Baltija Shipbuilding launched a multifunctional research vessel that the shipyard is building as a turnkey project for Klaipeda University.

The research vessel will be used for scientific purposes and for carrying out regular research. For instance, the vessel will be used to monitor marine environment, research fishery resources, respond to emerging marine pollution, and to monitor the pollution level of areas around buried chemical weapons. For that, the vessel will be equipped with two static laboratories and will provide working conditions for 18 scientific experts.

The university is pleased with the progress of work and the results achieved. Saulius Gulbinskas, the senior research worker of the Baltic Sea Coastal Research and Planning Institute of Klaipeda University says that the vessel is already booked for its first expeditions in the beginning of 2015.

The construction of the vessel was started in July 2013; now, after launching the vessel, the works continue with inspection and testing of installed equipment. According to the plan, the works shall be finished by the end of 2014. Shipbuilding supervision is carried out by the classification society Bureau Veritas.
